"No talking. No texting. No breathing."

On a soaking Sunday in 1993, Ana, the daughter of a film operator, takes over from her father the midnight screening of a nearly empty old movie theater in Montevideo just for that evening. What she doesn't know is that a ruthless killer, whose face is hidden under a hood, has locked himself in with the remaining viewers, taking them one by one.

Mediocre slasher.

These types of films that take place in a cinema come with a bonus, and that is that they are immediately attractive to film fans to watch. I like going to the cinema myself, and seeing a slasher with the cinema as a backdrop is of course a bonus. Then it feels like a kind of "familiar" film.

Furthermore, it is a shame that outside of the location it is a fairly mediocre film, and is therefore pretty much the disappointment of the week as I really wanted to see the film. It all started out quite nicely to be honest. A nice, silly horror movie that doesn't take too much time to get to its point. It has become a simple film, but that is not a bad thing for a slasher.

A second compliment is that it also communicates straightforwardly with the viewer and leaves out exaggerated sentiment. There isn't much depth to it, but oh well. The gore also cuts through nicely here and there, although I miss the real creativity. The blood may flow, but the ideas just cannot. Somewhat too standard chopping, but colored with nice practical effects.

That's where my compliments end unfortunately. The Last Matinee lacks a visual push. The colors are not precise enough, the camera work is too easy and the mounting and editing are simply colorless. The direction adds little to the film and just lets it all happen, which as a result makes it feel like a film you've seen before.

Also a seriously boring killer. No charm at all, no quirkiness at all. Once you, as a viewer, have seen the location, which is actually mainly used as a cinema hall, you will quickly notice that this Uruguayan slasher has little to it and will therefore become boring in no time. Always a shame.

Horror from Uruguay! The location is set in a movie theater with a maniac who chooses the last night's showing to gather the eyes of moviegoers. Great opening and nice location for a slasher. It is also nice that the viewer often sees images of the horror film that is playing at that moment. Yet the film does not really captivate. You get little or no bond with the victims and there is little room for a solid build-up. The kills are nice, the killer less so. The film also reminds me of an older film, but the title escapes me at the moment. 6/10

Great Uruguayan horror work. Always nice to have those giallo influences, in this case a killer with a black raincoat and black leather gloves and Argento-like lit scenes.

Starts quite atmospheric with a light tease of the killer buying a ticket in an old, large, atmospheric cinema. I got a bit of Demon's vibe from it. After that it cools down a bit, mainly due to the rather irritating characters who are all trying to get a mention in Annoyances in the cinema - Film: Cinemas - film forum . There is talking, smoking and masturbating during the cinema film. Etiquette is hard to find in this cinema in Montevideo.

When the killer goes to work, we are treated here and there to a nice dose of gore with nice practical effects. Pace could have been regulated a little better, although I think that has more to do with the fact that the majority of the characters are sitting in a cinema chair watching a film and therefore not doing much of anything interesting.

The kills that take place outside the cinema are generally the best. It is precisely in those scenes that the structure is good and Contenti can play nicely with the lighting. Visually it is sometimes a picture. Compliments. The soundtrack is extremely atmospheric and, in my opinion, could even have been more prominent.

As far as I'm concerned, this director should make more. Very atmospheric and visually strong South American horror. 0.0 depth, but a great film with a very acceptable running time.
