Prey for the Devil plot

"It wants in."

Sister Ann is a restless 25-year-old nun who believes exorcism is her calling. However, this is at odds with the traditions of her monastery. Nuns are not allowed to perform exorcisms, only priests. With the support of a mentor, who senses her special gift, she is allowed to follow training courses. Her desire to prove herself takes a personal turn when she encounters one of the school's most deranged patients. During their encounter, Sister Ann comes face to face with a demonic force that plagues the school and also has a mysterious connection to her own past.

Prey for the Devil

This horror film could do with it, but it just didn't get enough for me, the film was unfortunately too predictable for that.

The film started interestingly with the introduction of Sister Ann and what she has been through that has led her to become a nun. Then she gets lessons in exorcism, because she thinks it's her calling. She would become the 1st female exorcist. All well and good, but after that it goes downhill and the story becomes less interesting and leads nowhere.

The effects were okay and the acting was also fine. Unfortunately, the scares were almost predictable and the 'twist' or 'reveal' was not surprising to me either. The ending is also typical of a horror movie ending. There is always a stupid scare moment after the film seems to be closing 'all's well'.

In short, for the seasoned horror fan it is always worth a look, but don't expect too much.

3 stars.

Nun Ann(ie) [Jacqueline Byers] was abused as a child by her mother [Koyna Ruseva] who was not only schizophrenic, but (according to Ann) also possessed by the devil. That is why Ann is trained by Dr. Peters [Virginia Madsen] with which she can help with exorcisms. She becomes personally involved in the case of 11-year-old Natalie [Posy Taylor]. Because of her skill, Father Quinn [Colin Salmon] decides to break with tradition and transfers his knowledge of exorcising devils to Ann in the hope that she can save Natalie. Atmospherically filmed and with above-average special effects, but the screenplay does not make sense.

There are countless films that deal with exorcism. Some are interesting and exciting. Many are not at all. Prey for the Devil is a film that at least tries to be somewhat original. The setting is a Catholic school where young priests are trained as exorcists and things are not only handled religiously but also scientifically. A feminist element is introduced into the story in the form of protagonist Sister Ann, who appears to have a special exorcistic talent and shakes up the male stronghold with her tenacious and stubborn way of acting.

The story is also quite disappointing. Each new event opens intriguingly and then proceeds quite predictably. And so the film just ends up in the well-known exorcism concept. Even the characters who have interesting potential in principle do not convert that potential into something that gives them more face work. And thus all the characters are in stereotypical shallows. The same goes for Sister Ann. She is somewhat distinguished by her idiosyncrasy and a difficult past, but with that distinction she does not grow into a memorable character.

The horror moments. What about that? Every now and then you get an ominous feeling. That feeling mainly stems from the atmospheric drawing. A lot of use is made of limited light, shadow effect and creepy make-up. However, most of the action the viewer gets to see is pretty standard. For the trained viewer there is little to experience in terms of horror.

Prey for the Devil starts promising but never becomes more than an average horror work. I felt there could have been more to the setting, story and characters. Unfortunately that was not to be the case. I thought it was a lazy film that leaves a lot of potential unused.
