I Was a Simple Man plot
In Hawaii, Masao's plants bloom or wilt according to his own health. Now that he is terminally ill, the plants also perish. Throughout his life story, the island's past is also revealed, from Oahu's sugar cane plantations before World War II, to the sovereignty of Hawaii to the gentrification of Honolulu. As his condition deteriorates, Masao is confronted by the ghosts of his past. His wife Grace, among others, helps him by guiding him to the other side.
