Just like in Bang Gang (2015), director Eva Husson goes unbridled in this sombre tale about a maid who, in an incident during a Sunday in 1924 miraculously finds inspiration to grow into a celebrated author. The nonchalant way in which protagonist Odessa Young – after the departure of her lover – candidly parades naked through the house of a friendly family, may be good for the box office, but in the end adds little to the story. Still, I suspect that sniffing trip is the only part of the movie that sticks.
Film buffs looking forward to a reunion with Glenda Jackson will be disappointed. Olivia Colman and Colin Firth also barely get any screen time.

At the end of World War I, Jane Fairchild [Odessa Young] takes a job as a maid to Godfrey [Colin Firth] and Clarrie Niven [Olivia Colman]. Soon she begins an affair with Paul Sheringham [Josh O'Connor], the youngest of five sons and the only one not killed in the First World War. The story largely takes place in 1922 when Emma Hobday [Emma D'Arcy], the daughter of another wealthy family traumatized by the war, becomes engaged to Paul. Beautifully filmed with an eye for detail, but the parade of depressed characters is numbing. Husson frequently lets Young and O'Connor take off their clothes, although that adds little to this gloomy melodrama. Firth and Colman have little to do and two-time Oscar winner Glenda Jackson's contribution is very limited.

It takes a while before you can appreciate the time jumps and they no longer damage the storyline.

Once you get that far, you realize that the film is not looking for a story from A to Z, neatly constructed, but rather focuses on fragments and scenes that each contain emotions and meaning and some of which even turn out very nicely.

The common thread is, of course, the phenomenon of class distinctions, which has already been mentioned so much, ranging from high society to those destined to serve.

A 3, but feel that a second view could elicit a higher rating.

Still prefer something else.
