As a great fan of chess, I couldn't pass up a new film adaptation of Schachnovelle. Expectations were low beforehand and unfortunately this turned out to be right. Lead actor Oliver Masucci does a great job, the sets and costumes look beautiful, but unfortunately the execution of the film leaves a lot to be desired.

The chess elements are brought much too theatrically and the acting and screenplay are actually constantly a bit too much, so that the sincerity and integrity of the story are lost.

A missed opportunity and a chess story that deserved better.

Mediocre.
