Visually beautiful at times, and I often think the design is pretty cool. But it's an excruciatingly slow film, and that's the director's fault. Lots of hardly interesting scenes together with very static camera work and flat emotionless acting. The film never fascinated me. Towards the end it gets a little better, but then the film is lost for good. Again something with a major disaster but that plays very much in the background and feels a bit lazy. If Clooney then explains what's going on, the connection is lost and you as a viewer don't know anything yet. In itself that was quite nice, but at that point the irritation and boredom was already too high. A few individual moments (often those with music) help the film somewhat. 1,5*

Watching a movie as relaxation therapy.

And frankly, I had fallen asleep halfway through the first run, and what struck me this morning was just about the average of the not-too-positive image that echoes in many of the posts here. That could have been it, but something intrigued me - so I used this somewhat rainy and slow afternoon for a second look. And that was definitely better.

What doesn't work for me is that the flashbacks sometimes don't fit well into the main storyline, and especially because the older/younger actors sometimes don't exactly resemble their other version. That makes it difficult to keep up with it, especially if you are accidentally checking your social media at the same time. And another thing is that in the last 30, 40 minutes not so much happens. It really should have been a little shorter. And then Sweet Caroline, bitch.

Other than that, it's actually a pretty good movie. Clooney works quite well as a grumpy old grunt, Jones is appropriately annoying with her posh accent and pout. But the images are great, and that makes up for a lot. A wonderful contrast with the wet gray landscape that I see out of my window.

The bottom line is that the timing and the tension arc are not working. That certainly seems like a conscious choice, given the last scene and how the credits run around it. In itself positive actually, you should try something different now and then - even if it may have little chance of success.
