La Última Primavera plot

In 'La Cañada Real', a slum just outside Madrid, the tension mounts when the residents are told to leave their self-built houses. The land they live on has been sold. David, father of the family and a hard-working scrap dealer, does not want to give up and looks for a solution within the bureaucratic system. But his wife, the always cheerful Augustina, is desperate and the younger members of the family, eldest son David, daughter-in-law Maria and young Alejandro struggle with the realization that everything will soon change.

The film feels like a documentary and therefore gives a convincingly realistic and therefore interesting glimpse into life at the bottom in Spain (somewhat comparable to the position of caravan residents in the Netherlands who were also forced to live in flats), but ultimately the film suffers to the fact that it is neither meat nor fish: too little tension for the story and too little (background) information for a documentary. What is nice is that the film is not long.

A large family in a poor neighborhood just outside Madrid must prepare for the fact that the government will soon demolish their home. The idea that they have to leave this neighborhood where the children grew up weighs heavily, but until then the family has to try every day to put money and food on the table.

The Spanish-Dutch Isabel Lamberti worked under the mentorship of Mijke de Jong and she makes effective use of the non-professional cast consisting of residents of the neighborhood where the story takes place. Although this produces a number of nice moments that give others insight into the role and importance of family, there is no storyline and the coherence between the different scenes is hard to find. The result is a hodgepodge of nice scenes without any dramatic build-up or depth.

A Dutch-made film, actually, shot in an impoverished (illegal) neighborhood around Madrid. All the more reason for the city council to deploy major resources and raze the place to the ground. Next spring will certainly look different.

Despite the many shortcomings of their living situation, it is a known phenomenon that people are still attached to their situation, living environment, their roots or whatever. They see it as some kind of achievement, the only thing they have and can cling to.

It's pretty much the biggest leitmotif of the film. Some loose plots here and there that lead to little. But the film does offer an interesting look at how some people try to survive in an environment full of doom and gloom.
