Nice film about two women who become wives and friends not far from each other. The film is set in the mid-19th century. A very quiet pace and sometimes a bit boring. It all looks good, including the environment through the seasons. Two beautiful roles by Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby. Absolutely comparable to the also released in 2020 Ammonite, which managed to grab me a bit better.

The Supreme Disposer of all events does sometimes disappoint our earthly hopes.

And that's what he ultimately does in this film. The pace is too slow, the voiceover too distracting, and the language is somewhere between educational and annoying - and it's quite distracting when you spend half the film on your tablet looking up yet another word.

But the images are beautiful, and not only when the two ladies are in the picture. That makes up for a lot. That the sets were built especially for the films - in a park in Romania - is clearly visible. Very nice work.

I understand that this is not for everyone, but I love these kind of slow, slightly boring movies. In the evening with a glass of wine and then this movie.

A bit of an impossible love in the 19th century, beautifully portrayed by the two ladies.

The world to come?????
