I agree with this average. I've always had problems with so-called "good" criminals. This is cringeworthy: should we feel sympathy for these cold-blooded gangsters because they take good care of their families and go to church? And walk in the way of righteousness? The whole immoral setup of this Latino world partly torpedoes the film because I didn't have anything to do with any of the characters. However, the harsh and raw atmosphere is a plus for these types of films. That Conejo was really a seriously disturbed guy. Of course, Latino rap/hip hop should not be forgotten, a real cliché for these types of films and the music par excellence for tattooed and pierced criminals who usually end up between four planks after their tough territorial actions...

Lots of showmanship with a shootout here and there. The “final boss” is an evil guy. Too few explosions.

Weak.

Possibly David Ayer's worst film. His umpteenth crime film, made with the same ingredients as always, but this time it doesn't work. He makes way too much of a music video out of it. Slick gangsters in tailor-made suits who come to do their thing with a lot of fuss and bling bling. On the soundtrack, some Latino rapper warbles on autotune. It's something to me. Bobby Soto is a travesty as the lead actor, the well-known face Shia LaBeouf has little to do. That leaves a rare shoot-out, which Ayer usually knows what to do with, but for an action film you don't get fifteen minutes of action here. Disappointing.

1.5
