Miss Americana plot

Taylor Swift is a very popular singer who has repeatedly topped the charts and filled concert halls. Starting over a decade ago in the country scene, she has been making her way into the pop genre for a few years now. Swift constantly challenges herself both professionally and personally, while trying to maintain her own vision as an artist. Her doings are widely reported in the press. Swift was followed for several years for this documentary. She embraces her role as a songwriter, artist and woman who uses the power of her voice to the fullest.

Miss Americana

Excellent documentary about the life of Taylor Swift. A young woman who wanted to be friends with everyone at the beginning of her career, but due to the election of Trump and the polarization in America, she is under pressure to make a choice and show what she stands for.

With these types of documentaries, the question is always how much the artist really shows of himself, but Swift sometimes shows herself vulnerable. I missed the openness that Lady Gaga showed in her documentary, for example, and in that respect this documentary remains quite well-behaved and a bit too superficial. I thought the limited influence that even someone like Swift has on the outcome of the elections in her home state of Tennessee was an interesting point, and that even the Democrats joke about it (while you see how much effort it took for Swift to express herself). to speak) shows once again how deeply divided the US of A is.

I'm not a big fan of Taylor Swift, but as a music lover I was interested in the singer that I didn't know much about. And I was very pleasantly surprised by the documentary. Not that I'm suddenly crazy about her music, although her album 'folklore' isn't bad. But it is a fascinating documentary that does not follow the pattern of biographies with either a rise & fall story or a lot of chatting people with the artist's greatest hits in between.

Miss Americana follows the singer herself and less the pop star she portrays on stage. The singer who grew up with country music and has the ambition to shine on stage. We see her behind the scenes working on songs and growing professionally. But also the lesser side of stardom that she has to deal with. The hatred on social media, the prejudices about her because she is a young blonde pop star with a lot of glitter, and the unwanted sexual acts that many women experience. We never get to see the real person in a documentary, but here you get close to Taylor herself. How she deals emotionally with certain things. And ultimately dare to take the step to speak out publicly about certain things. Which is not obvious, because she is on that stage for music. And she knows in advance that social or political statements will in any case cause backlash and even more hatred.

It remains a documentary and visually it is not that special. But the balance is right, we get to see Taylor Swift, not just a stage act or a lot of witnesses. It is made fascinating and also forms a whole. Which is not always the case if you have images over the years and try to make them into a whole. Very pleasantly surprised.

Well, this is a orchestrated whole. In fact, Taylor Swift sometimes talks it together herself, it is very clear the story as she wants to present it. You can also see it in the selection of television images that are inserted: in this way it remains a superstar's film about himself, but it is not a film that immerses you in the Swift universe from the inside.

I thought it was all very obvious, but I don't really like this artist. It's nice that she finally dares to speak out politically (and what happened with those Dixie Chicks is sad) but okay, not really unique or anything. In terms of personality, she doesn't do anything for me, it's striking how little contact there is with fans, and that conversation with that one friend in an incredibly ugly Efteling kitchen was almost painful.

The best part is what you get to see when working on a song, sometimes alone behind the piano but often in a studio together with one of her producers. She made her last two albums together with members of The national, but unfortunately that falls outside the scope of this film. I was less impressed by the concert footage, rather generic in its audiovisual style and rarely does a song sound more elaborate.

Well, I'm not a hater, but I'm certainly not a lover either, and every now and then I felt like I was being fake (if those horrible Twitter characters who turned against her in the riot with Kanye West hadn't robbed me of the opportunity to say that outright). Furthermore, I wish her nothing but the best, as long as it doesn't involve any more Grammys for best album, three is really enough.
