Layered film about the front and back of adoption. On the one hand, there are the childless parents, who, after much deliberation, opt for adoption. On the other hand, the young teenager, who is reluctantly forced to give her newborn baby up for adoption.

Director Naomi Kawase takes the time to introduce both parties and their respective issues. In the second part of the film, in which the people involved are confronted with each other, she initially chooses to camouflage the identity of the biological mother. In retrospect, a rather flashy attempt to mislead the viewer. The story does not get any less, however.

All in all, a moving film that manages to avoid false sentiments. As to be expected, another excellent performance by the experienced Hiromi Nagasaku, with the note that Aju Makita (as the teenager) is hardly inferior to her. Without a doubt a beautifully designed film – with a gripping story – that deserves a wide audience.

Strong film about teenage pregnancy and adoption circuits. Not performed for the first time, but quite original and therefore strong in its approach and implementation. The focus and emphasis is placed entirely on the development of the characters. The depth and development of the characters comes first and that has turned out to be an excellent choice from Kawase. By far her best film, in my opinion.

The film is layered and takes its time to develop the plot. The flashbacks or forwards are brought at the right time and certainly not in abundance. No moral judgment is given on the subject either. Apart from serene music, there are no sentimental strings to be found and silence often offers an even more powerful signal to penetrate.

Hardly anything to criticize about the acting either. Despite the serious problems, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Fine!

Tender and emotional approach to a theme that only causes pain and will never be out of date.

Naomi Kawasi presents her film without pompous situations, but emphasizes the deep drama that takes place in the hearts of both mothers, their doubts but also their mutual understanding.

Beautiful film with a deeply human view of a delicate event. Supported by simple, moving interpretations and adapted music.
