Very nice Netflix original.

You shouldn't usually expect too much from manga adaptations. They are often fun, but seldom really special, or they must have a great director behind them. This surprise was all the greater, especially since the film is based on a shoujo manga (comics for teenage girls).

The reactions of the "fans" are also clear. The film is sabotaged on all sides, anyone expecting a simple story will be disappointed. Yamato is smart enough as a young director to make the most of the situation. Budget + carte blanche means doing your own thing. How many young directors get that chance?

Visually it looks very nice, but in the end it is the editing that catches the eye the most. Also in the soundtrack, by the way, some conversations seem more like a barrage of sounds. Actors also do well, although their role often remains rather limited. On the other hand, there are also a few longer, uncut tracking shots, which show that they can also hold their own.

Not that you can't stop watching this movie once, it's on Netflix. It is a pity that availability is not the only obstacle.

4.5* and a extensive review

Visually a very beautiful film that is indeed strongly edited. But the film falls short in other areas, especially when it comes to the plot, which is just too melodramatic. We get a lot to choose from: several boys who (try to) abuse the naive main character, who is very busy finding himself, where it turns out that brother is adopted, and with marital problems of the mainly absent parents of some characters. Lots of navel-gazing from the main character, which makes sense for high school students; it must have appealed to me when I was still in school, but now it is quite far from me.

The style of the soundtrack is mostly nice, although it is sometimes a bit present, especially at the beginning and the end, where the characters are also quite (too) busy. It is a pity that the melodies that pass in review are rather clichéd: Kortjakje is always sick, Canon van Pachelbel, Für Elise van Beethoven. That is detrimental anyway.

Good, but the visual makes up for a lot, I just have a weakness for that, so I end up at 3.5 *.

Wow.

I actually just expected a nice romantic movie with a bit of coming of age drama, but thanks to Yamoto's direction, this is really a lot more than that. For example, I read above some criticism of the melodramatic script, and although I can understand that criticism, it is Yamoto's elaboration that, in my opinion, far exceeds the melodramatic script here.

Onderhond already mentioned it, but the editing is really amazing and lifts this film from beautiful to a (small) masterpiece. It's a bit of a shame that such a review on YouTube then gets 800K (!) views because she thought the editing/camera was way too busy. That is immediately the disadvantage that it is on Netflix .. because that is how Netflix gives her 96% in terms of recommendation and me 55% (!!). Now I myself attach 0.0 value to such a Netflix recommendation, but many others do and so a film like this quickly ends up with the "wrong" audience. Maybe it's my ADD brain, but this one could very well be in my top 10 films with best editing. It's a shame it isn't rewarded more.

In addition to the editing, the soundtrack is also very nice. In particular the variations of Canon in D - Pachelbel and Fur Elise fit the vibe of the movie well. Visually also a very nice film (sneak peak), beautiful use of color, image composition, and lighting. Especially great that Yamoto manages to keep this up for 2 hours. For example, the ending could have been quite tense (film could have ended half an hour earlier, for example), but because of the visual delights (especially the editing) every "extra" shot remains a pleasure.

Really quite impressed, so if people are still hesitating and appreciate smooth editing, I'd definitely give this a shot.

4.5*
