Synthwave not only harks back to the synthpop of the eighties, but also to the glossy visual style of that period. The (soundtracks of) films, TV series and computer games of the time, such as Miami Vice, Lethal Weapon and Top Gun, are a great source of inspiration for many synthwave musicians. Director John Carpenter is one of the heroes of the synthwave, especially because of the often eerie soundtracks he made for his own films – played on synthesizers, of course.
