Frustrating. Antebellum starts with balls. The situation is stylishly sketched with one long tracking shot right through the plantation. What follows is an atmospheric period piece, which occasionally transcends itself through beautiful cinematography (such as the compositions in the cotton fields) and tight sound design with nice details (such as the rifle shots as tension-drums). But it all goes wrong when the 'twist' is started halfway through. With an annoyingly unsubtle, pedantic tone, a lot of trivial social justice crap is fired at you again.

It voluntarily exchanges its original historical setting for the drapy modern city life. Ironic that a convention preaches that they want to get rid of the 'angry black woman' stereotype, but the film then comes up with the most caricatured fat sassy black friend character. Too stupid. There are several ways that could have led to this 'twist' and this (breaking open) is wmb the most rigorous and therefore the least. ''There's no room for introspection or difficult questions here. Antebellum therefore reads like the corporate spawn of “Black horror,” pieced together from Twitter anti-racist soundbites and crafted for maximum clout.'' This sums it up perfectly. It could have been so much more with less.

So, now I regret that.

Often the movies that are like "is not a horror at all!!" are labeled as scary-looking thrillers or psychological horror. I'm much more into that than jumpscares and gore and the like, so I usually go and watch them right and I think they're pretty good.

But this was none of those. Nothing even came close to being 'scary' or 'exciting'. I found the film very incoherent and predictable/cliche. The pedantic tone was indeed clearly noticeable, and at a certain point it started to become disturbing. The twist couldn't save the day.

From a technical point of view, the beginning and the end of the film were the best. Nicely portrayed with beautiful music, also how Victoria has freed herself with the slow-motion and the plane. Too bad there are 100 boring minutes in between.

Forgot to add an opinion. Good movie. Nice twists, quite exciting and original it is for sure.

Way too weak score here. This is a thriller that is definitely worth checking out.
