Bruno Dumont knows how to time his film. Already in 2019 he worked on this film. A satire on television, media, fame and the elite. News and fake news. By the time the film came out, we had a pandemic and meanwhile also the war in Ukraine. The film hovers between a real indictment and a comic satire. It takes a little too long, but still has some interesting scenes. It is mainly Léa Seydoux who helps keep the film straight. It mainly remains with some good ideas, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

There is plenty to criticize about this film. The criticism of the media is rather short-sighted and ill-considered (although on a meta level it could, of course, also be a parody of media criticism); the main character is extremely annoying at times (but not at other times, so you're pretty sure it's a choice); and the interaction between events and decisions is rather obvious, while turning points in 'real' life are usually diffuse, more turning zones than turning points actually.

But I still thought it was a great movie. That was due to the casualness of the narration, the daring to close subplots that initially seem to be the main plot, and the experimental way of filming that succeeded here and there, or at least the stylistic breaks. That scene where man and child crash for example, I loved that one, even though it was the most unbelievable car accident in movie history.

I think it is more important to me how something is told than what is told. And then Bruno Dumont is a good one.

What a pain to get through this movie. Thought to turn it off a few times, especially when my attention really went off, but I think that's a weakness.
It all starts well, with the narcissistic protagonist, a light-hearted angle in a heavy news theme and the clear critical look at journalism. Where you take the slowness to heart in the beginning, with a look at how news items are made on location, but gradually it really gets in the way. The main character is attractive, annoying and dramatic at the same time, which may have its charm. Unfortunately, she's crying for about half the movie, which is really annoying and definitely not functional anymore.
The first twist started with the car accident, where someone is advised to walk at a walking pace, but then has to rehabilitate for 3 months. The insights, the development that the main character goes through, do not feel logical, too much for the style. And that slowness. Especially from the clinic it is almost impossible to do. It feels too cliche, with the famous person getting depressed. I just watched the scene with the car accident of the husband and son again; how unrealistic and bad was that, I really laughed out loud and I didn't think that was the intention at all. Dramatic. And then just the romance that fails and still succeeds.
Oh, and would someone please take the comedy genre out of the description? Totally inappropriate and misleading; I had expected a lot more cynicism in this theme (which it also seemed like at the beginning) and that was also the reason why I went to see the film. It is all drama, and that not only describes the genre, but also the content. Pooh.
