1933, Berlin. Anna is only nine years old when her life suddenly changes. To escape the Nazis, her father Arthur Kemper, a well-known journalist, has to flee to Zurich. At the end of 1932, the German-Jewish theater critic Arthur Kemper [Oliver Masucci] fled to Prague for fear of the National Socialists. Just before the 1933 elections, wife Dorothea [Carla Juri] and children Max [Marinus Hohmann] and Anna [Riva Krymalowski] also leave their homeland behind and the family settles in Switzerland. The title refers to the stuffed animal that Anna has to leave behind when she leaves Germany. Based on the autobiographical novel by Judith Kerr and told from the perspective of nine-year-old Anna, who has been oblivious for a long time to the threat looming over them and the consequences it has for family and friends left behind. This captivating approach to the persecution of the Jews in Germany is well developed with a sense of time and place and benefits enormously from Krymalowski's disarming, authentic acting. A unique example of a war film suitable and interesting for all ages.

A film in the genre of "The boy in the striped pajamas". Light-hearted and intended for a teenage audience about the events of World War II. Also originally a book by author Judith. The title of the film (and the book) immediately betrays the style and target audience.
So it never becomes visually explicit, but mentally you still get an idea of what it is like to have to go through life as a refugee from one day to the next. Anna is well-to-do, but apart from this, the impact is also great. Because of her father's job, freedom of speech comes to the fore. It is also interesting to note that the neutral liberal Switzerland would rather not have its criticism of Nazi Germany become too public so as not to offend anyone.
A film from Anna's perspective, but also one that I think gets through to the viewing audience. Well done with a captivating story.

Well, actually an autobiographical success story about a Jewish girl Anna who already fled abroad with her family at the time that Hitler committed his coup d'état in 1933. Father Kempner was a critic and as an opponent of the Nazi party he already ran the chance of being opposed to to run the lamp. Jews were enemies of the party, but Jewish intellectuals, that was even worse! The family fled to Switzerland and when father found work in Paris, the children were also transferred there.
The direction is nothing to complain about, but the story still feels a bit dull and is whipped up with the necessary sentiment. Seems like a great travel adventure for the girl Anna, but the underlying social reality (the hatred of the Jews) was pretty well concealed. The more poverty-stricken conditions in the Parisian flat do not really get through either. That will also be due to the fact that this is intended as a youth film, so it must all remain child-friendly. It's a choice but for me personally this was quite disappointing.
