Kardec plot
"The story behind the name"
France 19th century. León Rivail, now best known under his pseudonym Allan Kardec, is a valued teacher in both the arts and sciences in Paris. He distinguishes himself as a pedagogue. In 1854, Kardec hears people talking for the first time about the revolving tables, a popular entertainment of the higher French circles. After a séance, Kardec establishes spiritualism. According to Kardec, spiritualism is a "science" concerning the nature, origin and destiny of spirits, as well as their relations with the corporeal world. In 19th century Catholic France, the authorities soon spot him.

Unexpectedly came across this film on Netflix and enjoyed it. Beautiful true story about the origins of spiritualism and its founder. Learned something new from history. Everything is beautifully depicted, especially Paris in 1850 with some recognizable places and monuments. The typical 'dark', almost musty study rooms with lots of books and candlelight also contribute to an atmospheric setting. The right choice of color and lighting gave this film a certain appeal. The story itself is presented at a very calm, flowing pace. It will not appeal to everyone and for some it will be a bit too quiet and well-behaved.
Here and there you see some cheap CGI (carriages around Arc De Triomf) but it is not disturbing and the film does not rely on it.
