In the scale-expanding odyssey Lillian, a Russian immigrant searches the long way back from New York to Siberia. Her field of vision captures a country devastated by shame, which has long lost its innocence.

The real Lillian Alling crossed the United States and Canada in the mid-roaring twenties. The most basic, practical circumstances would have roughly mirrored the journey that Austrian filmmaker Andreas Horvath (Helmut Berger, Actor, 2015) improvised together without a script with his Lillian (Patrycja Planik): the language speaks she doesn't, she hardly has any luggage and the course of her journey is uncertain at every moment. The main difference? Horvath situates his hypothetical version of Lillian's journey in the torn American present. And other than giving away the sources, we now find out how that journey ultimately ended.

Oh dear.

In the first part we see what America is like - soulless, without honor, aimless, without interest or attention for anything outside its own circle. And before anyone says something about that - it completely matches what I experienced there myself. What a beautiful country - a shame and sad that all those Americans live there.

And then the second part. I'm not really sure if I think that's the right choice - but hey, it's there, and maybe it tells the story correctly. Or maybe it came to an end before that, we don't really know.

A very, seriously beautifully filmed story that - again - does not give a very positive image of the US. And completely in line with my experiences there, even though I must say that I have never been to the center, but what I read about it...

Not just a road movie that is for everyone, I think. We follow a woman from Russia who no longer sees a future in the United States and decides to return to her home country on foot by completing the trip from New York to Alaska on foot.

The special thing about the film is that the main character does not speak or has any thoughts through a voice-over or anything throughout the film. She is also shy of people, which means her contact with her is very limited. The focus is then on the landscape and the environment.

There we get to see the most beautiful and the ugliest of the United States. Industry and wastelands along motorways are in stark contrast to the wonderful nature that undergoes a gigantic metamorphosis every 1000 kilometers. The ending with the parable about the whales also appealed to me the least, but the rest is very worthwhile. One to relax with.
