Happily surprised.

Didn't expect much from it, recent commercial horror cinema rarely delivers gems. Now it is also true that you should not expect anything innovative from this film, Ready or Not is not the future of the horror film. What it is, is an almost perfectly executed horror/comedy.

The duo has been working on it for a while, but I haven't been too enthusiastic about their work so far. That changes a bit with this movie. Visually it looks great, both in terms of location and decoration. Soundtrack also works nicely and Weaving is perfect for her role. The rest of the actors also know how to find the balance between funny and creepy.

It is a film in which you as a horror fan will discover little new, but the execution is just great everywhere. A very fun, entertaining and fast-paced horror film. It also doesn't last too long, so nothing to complain about. Not a great, brilliant film, but great genre work.

4.0* and a extended review

Rich America gets a taste of its own medicine in this villainous, melancholy, but above all very entertaining horror film. Samara Weaving (Hugo's niece) stars as Grace, the bride of Alex LeDomas [Mark O'Brien], a scion of a wealthy family that has owned a "lordship" of board games for generations. Right after the wedding, Alex's (to put it mildly) eccentric family confronts Grace with the fact that she must play a game before she can actually belong to the family. Fate dictates that they play hide-and-seek, a game that under the circumstances should be played under special - read: deadly - rules.
The cast goes wild, including visibly enjoying Andie Macdowell who makes short shrift of her good image, and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett make sure no sick joke misses the mark. Screenwriters Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy took a good look at The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and the finale is a hilarious parody of Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922) . There is also quite a bit of gore to admire in a horror film that also makes the seasoned genre lovers guess at the next twist. A breath of fresh air!

Very nice entertaining film that for me turned out just differently than most horror films of recent years. The story has an original angle and it is not necessary to use an abacus for the kills. There's no countdown to the last character, which in itself is a bold and surprising move. And then we're not even talking about the great climax towards the end. Not predictable at all. Wonderful humor between the lines and a great perfectly cast role from Samara Weaving. 8/10
