The young architect Hans has let himself be taken in by the megalomaniac promises of Adolf Hitler. Driven by passion for a great Third Reich, Hans joins the SS and is appointed as a guard in Auschwitz. His education makes him the perfect man to lead the construction of a new gas chamber. Young and driven as Hans is, he starts that project. His docile demeanor changes when he comes into contact with one of his slave labourers, Helena. Dealing with her opens his eyes to the horrific atrocities of the Nazis. While Hans tries to deal with conflicting feelings of pride and disgust, Helena keeps a secret that threatens to revolutionize his life.
