"The true story about the man who brought down the Mafia"

Tells the true story of Tommaso Buscetta, a Sicilian mafia boss who becomes the first major prominent figure in the mafia world to break the duty of secrecy. In the 1980s he was extradited from Brazil to Italy where he passed on information to the Cosa Nostra. This decision is partly fueled by the murder of his sons and brothers by another mob clan. His testimony leads to the first major organized crime trial.

Tells the true story of Tommaso Buscetta, a Sicilian mafia boss who became the first major figure in the mafia world to break the secrecy obligation. In the 1980s, he is extradited from Brazil to Italy, where he passes on information to the Costa Nostra. (think they meant here instead of "VAN") This decision is partly led by the murder of his sons and brothers by another mafia clan.

The entire "story" of his relationship to Falcone is told in the film most summarily.

His testimony leads to the first major organized crime trial, right

but in such a cringe-worthy way that it puts you to sleep.

take a look and judge for yourself.

It is that I happened to have seen the last part of the documentary 'Corleone: Mafia and Blood' a few days earlier, otherwise I would probably have already dropped out after the blurry introduction. The makers apparently assume that the viewer knows what it is about, but while the Maxi trial was big news, it is not something that is much talked about outside Italy. The protagonists in that trial were the intrepid judge Falcone, who knowingly risked his life to break up the Cosa Nostra, and Totò Riina, the absolute head of the Cosa Nostra who was directly responsible for the horrific attacks on and executions of anyone who even got in his way. However, director and co-screenwriter Marco Bellochio chooses the perspective of Tommaso Buscetta [Pierfrancesco Favino], who decided to become an informant because he was sure Riina would eventually turn against him too.

That could have made for an interesting story, but unfortunately that is not the case. The story of the demise of the Cosa Nostra is nothing short of fascinating, but is much better told in the form of a ten-hour miniseries. Falcone and Riina have become an afterthought here and the dramatic direct confrontation between Tommaso and the mafia bosses degenerates into a farce. How the police managed to charge 366 people at the same time and arrest (almost) all of them, as well as how they managed to get them into one courtroom, is already a fantastic story, but not a word is mentioned here. If you want to reconstruct history, be complete. This is a textbook example of how not to do it.

A mafia movie not as we know it through The Godfather or Scarface, but puts its emphasis on the court event when a member becomes a repentant. What follows is a puppet theater of the highest caliber in which insults and rants are the order of the day. Amusing, if it were not a bitter reality. But it certainly is good cinema, figuratively speaking. Great acting, yes, but not always exciting. At times even tedious or unnecessarily complex. It is indeed something of a documentary.

Complex to follow because it may provide too little explanation of the how, who and what. But it was a cause for concern at the time. It's a pity that this is not reflected enough in the film.
