Midway plot

"One battle turned the tide of war."

Based on the battle of Midway. This lasted from June 4, 1942 to June 7, 1942, during which the Americans fought the Japanese with far fewer pilots and soldiers, but still managed to win, thus causing a turning point in World War II. We follow a number of people. These included Admiral Chester Nimitz who was a commander of the Pacific Fleet. Wade McClusky was an airplane pilot during the battle and Edwin Layton was an admiral who was part of an intelligence team aimed at revealing the positions of the Japanese.

"This is for Pearl" exclaims Lieutenant Dick Best [Ed Skrein] in the finale of this slice of American self-aggrandizement that nevertheless has the audacity to dedicate the film "to all the American and Japanese Marines who died in the Battle of Midway." But don't think that much attention is paid to the Japanese side of the story! On a scale from Pearl Harbor (2001) to Tora! Torah! Torah! (1970) this is simply Pearl Harbor 2. Screenwriter Wes Tooke and director Roland Emmerich even felt it necessary to partly remake that film, because "Midway" begins with the attack on Pearl Harbor and the bombing of Tokyo by James Doolittle [Aaron Eckhart]. Much attention is paid to the victims and relatives of Pearl Harbor, but we see absolutely nothing of the horrific consequences of the bombing of Tokyo. The Chinese don't get off too badly either, so there is absolutely no question of any historical balance here.

Obviously, the film revolves around soldiers and officers who actually played a key role and leave it to Emmerich to portray those people in a comical way as heroes of the people. The superficial, hollow monologues are a good aid, but it reinforces the feeling that you are watching an inferior sequel to Pearl Harbor. The bombings are technically well made, but Midway has nothing new to offer in that area either. It's that some big names show up, including Dennis Quaid and Woody Harrelson, but that's the only thing that somewhat distinguishes this bombastic nonsense from a B-movie.

In the meantime I also saw Midway and in all honesty I have to admit that I didn't really feel like it too much. But a spectacular film in the cinema is usually an added value in that respect. And that's actually the biggest plus of the film. Unique to Emmerich is the beautiful computer-controlled orchestrated visual spectacle that is presented to you. The film is full of action of fighting and crashing planes on the one hand and bombed and sinking battleships on the other. This mass spectacle, however, ignores other aspects of the film as expected.

Although I was led to believe that all the naval battles since Pearl Harbor are followed reasonably well, the film still falls short in content. The film seemed a bit too fragmented to me, jumping from one fight scene to the next with credits showing the where and when of the situation. But I didn't find it really coherent. Take that Doolittle for example: a beautiful scene in China in itself, but it disappeared from the radar as quickly as it came on. The quiet scenes were insufficient because of the limited depth of the characters and minimal dialogues of the actors. I could only taste Woody Harrelson and Patrick Wilson was also the only one on level.

Are the Japanese involved in the film? Gosh, I don't really think so. Except for the generals or admirals, I saw few ordinary people. Their horror towards the Chinese and other practices was briefly discussed - and rightly so - but I saw little nuance with the Americans. I already saw greater contrasts, but I still hoped for more. Between all the distant violence, here and there a poignant scene with the prisoner of war, the crushed plane by the aircraft carrier or the scenes in China. All in all a decent film, a narrow 3.0*.

An abundance of mediocre CGI, hasty storytelling, exaggerated quasi tough characters and many shots that are recycled with every attack, causing the attention to fade by the minute. In short, a characteristic bombastic bad product as only Emmerich can deliver. No actor reaches his level and especially the role of the protagonist is Skreinend.

Tight 2.0*
