Saludos Amigos plot

"Walt Disney goes South American in his gayest musical Technicolor feature"

This film consists of four different parts. These all begin with various clips of the Disney artists sketching the drawn culture of the countries they visit. The international traveling companions are Donald Duck and Goofy. They keep things alive when Donald encounters a stubborn llama and "El Gaucho" Goofy tries out life as a South American cowboy. 'Saludos Amigos' takes the viewer from the high peaks of the Andes Mountains to the Pampas of Argentina and the sounds and sights of Rio de Janeiro.

The 6th Disney Classic.

Length: 42 minutes.

Saludos Amigos (1942) - IMDb

Contents:

The only Classic film not available on the website. Due to a lack of funding caused by the war and the relative prosperity in South America (and a Europe at war), this film has become a kind of holiday brochure set throughout South America. We see footage of cartoonists traveling through, several live-action sequences featuring dance and folklore, and four animated shorts. These include Donald at Lake Titicaca, a small plane flying over the Andes, Goofy as a gaucho, and Donald with Joe Carioca (his debut role) in Rio de Janeiro.

Opinion:

A nice idea that, despite its lack of funding, has its best moments. For example, the idea of presenting it as a travel program and advertising brochure is excellent. You see the artists, you see them generate ideas, and you see a few things about those regions in the four animated films. That way, you learn a little something new. These days, that's hardly new, but I can imagine that 70 years ago, it would have been quite a discovery for many children (and adults, too).

Not all the clips are equally interesting, and Goofy is downright boring because absolutely nothing happens in those seven minutes. The film also feels unfinished and is simply a sideshow that never really sticks.

The animation is otherwise never particularly remarkable, except for the final section, which features numerous transformations and a beautiful color palette. The music is passable, and unlike other Disney films of the time, it's thankfully not noisy.

Nice Disney anthology.

The setup is actually what makes this film so enjoyable. The combination of some live-action footage, the resulting sketches (often so much more beautiful than the typical Disney style), and the final short films inspired by the team's on-site visits.

The length is also a godsend. 40 minutes (10x4) is more than enough for a film like this. The animated sequences themselves are also quite funny, with the airplane and the live painting during the Brazil section as standouts. I liked the Goofy segment the least.

The variety, freedom of form, and short running time make this quite enjoyable. It's not a masterpiece, but I don't consider any Disney animated film to be. Just a very enjoyable little interlude with a few quirky touches and plenty of charm.

I didn't really care for this one either. It's a kind of Disney advertorial about South America, alternating between live-action footage and animated shorts starring Goofy and Donald Duck, among others. Even then, "typically South American" scenes (according to the clichés, anyway) are depicted without much action. We see Lake Titicaca and Native American women, the Argentine pampas and gauchos, the Andes, and Rio de Janeiro. I actually found the live-action the most interesting, with some footage of South America in the 1940s, but even that wasn't much to write home about. Oh well, it was only 42 minutes long.
