Nice.

As far as I'm concerned, Øvredal continues to do well, although I always miss that little bit extra that could lead to a real masterpiece. Here he clearly leans more towards del Toro's work, especially when you look at the creature designs, but it doesn't get as good as the producer's work.

Sixties, a group of young people, a haunted house where a sinister story from the past lies. They are familiar elements of a setup that indicate a horror for slightly younger viewers. It is in itself. Although there are quite a few violent scenes, the real gore is limited and it is mainly a film that lives on tension.

Except for some creepy and weird creature designs. They really stand out and make it a lot better. Everything else looks very good, only the insects on the scarecrows I found a bit too cheesy, would have had just as much impact without it. But you do notice that this is a film that was made with a nice budget.

The result is a very solid and entertaining horror film, which lacks some extra pepper to score even higher. But it certainly didn't get boring. In any case, don't mind that his next one is also coming this year.

3.5*

Entertaining horror piece, produced by Guillermo Del Toro, which cleverly combines a number of separate scary stories into an exciting whole. A bit too much aimed at a younger audience so that there is no real misery, but the smooth direction by director Andre Øvredal (who previously impressed with Trolljegeren and The Autopsy Of Jane Doe) makes up for a lot. In addition, the plot is quite inventive and fresh, with some genuinely creepy moments.

Still wonderful to see people here tearing down the film with words like bridge squeaker horror or teenage horror....because that's exactly what the film wants to be. If you're starting to watch this with the idea of getting some hardcore goor scarefest...well, that's your problem. The film is pg13 because it is also intended to be pg13.

The film is based on the book series of the same name that always felt a little scarier and meaner than Goosebumps and aimed at children around the age of 12. The film really exudes that atmosphere with monsters that were almost literally taken from the books in terms of design and an atmosphere that is very similar. In that respect it is also a really good horror film for children who are around 10 or 12 who are still a bit too young for the more serious work, but even for adults there is more than enough fun to enjoy the nice atmosphere and a few really effective scary scenes.

Just see it for what it is, namely a film adaptation of a series of scary children's books... and you'll come a long way with these scary stories.
