While filming his latest project, Salvador Mallo, film director, meditates on the choices he has made in his life. He is confronted with his own mortality as well as with the women in his life and the emptiness he feels. Ultimately, he will have to come to terms with both his present and his past.

From the beginning of the film you are treated to beautiful, symbolic images and original yet realistic story elements so that you immediately know: this is an intelligent film and no matter how the story develops it is a good film.
In terms of story, it appears to be mainly a personal reflection of Almodovar on his own life. In the film we see a director who is burdened with pain and ailments all his life and who when he grows old is physically unable to make a new film and falls into boredom, depression, heroin use [ /spoiler]but also in retrospect and a kind of confession in which he realizes what he has done to his loved ones (with the trigger that a classic film of his is being reissued in the cinema). The gloria part of the film may stand for the fact that despite his pains he was successful as a filmmaker but I think it mainly stands for how as an old man he fills his time with healing old wounds/relationships and even more to make a movie about his life. Although the director says in the film that he does not yet know whether his new film will be a comedy or a drama because he does not know how it will end, as it naturally applies to everyone's life.
What is special about the story are the metal layers or Droste effects, such as that Amodovar makes a film about his life and that in the film a director also makes a film about his life and that the director in the film itself is played by an actor in a play. All in all, the film is very reminiscent of Fellini's Otto e Mezzo and of Sorentino's Fellini-inspired La Grande Bellezza. That makes the film not very original, but it is very well made.
I give the film an 8.5 (which fits nicely with Fellini's original film).

This one disappointed me. I didn't really get into it and I didn't find the story that interesting, despite quite interesting characters. It rippled on without me being very touched and impressed. I've seen better Almodovar movies. Well played. A small sufficient (6). 3*

I especially thought this was a fine film that gave a certain serene calmness and especially nice looking away. You recognize Almodóvar in it with the many strikingly bright colors, but fortunately nicely processed and not as kitschy as in his older films. The story is barely there, more of an atmospheric portrait, and that suits me. The film didn't really touch me, but the film didn't do much wrong either. The nostalgic images were also very nice in between with a nice role by Cruz. 3.5*.
