Antlers isn't all that bad. Okay, the story is quite simple, both in design and execution, but the visual aspect and especially the atmosphere makes up for a lot here. The rainy, gloomy, muddy landscape of the American Oregon is fantastically portrayed, which leads to a very atmospheric whole. And of course such a thing is not unimportant in a horror film, especially in one that focuses on mystery and a slow build-up. As a viewer you only half realize how the fork is in the stem, and that mystery is maintained nicely in the first hour. Well acted by Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons (funnily enough, that man pops up everywhere these days, but I'm not complaining), the boy was not really convincing. An hour of build-up eventually turns into a somewhat more explosive ending, with a great looking monster and some nice filthy bits of body horror. It might get a little silly at the end, but the movie already earned enough credit from me by then. It is all nowhere high, but it is definitely a fine horror film that has enough beautiful things to offer in terms of images, atmosphere and music. Sometimes it doesn't have to be more. Small 3.5'.

It hungers for you

When I heard that this production was related to a story Nick Antosca had written, I was sold. Channel Zero, The Act and Brand New Cherry Flavor were all written by him, and although the quality varied regularly, the (mini)series often felt refreshing and I enjoyed his work. Antlers also initially feels like a breath of fresh air within the horror genre. In addition, practical effects are frequently used, which I am a big proponent of anyway.

Besides good writing, a decent director is just as important, and unfortunately things go wrong in this area. In terms of elaboration, they largely miss the point. This starts with one of the biggest horror clichés in the genre: introducing a traumatized child who expresses his traumatic experiences through disturbing drawings. And unfortunately it doesn't stop here. Think of the addition of an incompetent police officer, worried school teacher and completely unbelievable actions of characters. The simplistic and predictable course provide the final blow.

It almost hurts that so much potency is lost to a mediocre effect. Antlers is yet another example of my love-hate relationship with horror. It's one of my favorite genres, but 80% of the movies that come out are (very) mediocre to bad. This was just doable because of the cool creature design, but all the work that went into this definitely didn't get the effect it deserved.

2.5*

Antlers kicks off like a full-blooded horror. Two men. An abandoned mine. Darkness. Growling noises. A threatening atmosphere. Soon after the opening, however, it becomes clear that Antlers is not a full-blooded horror. The film does have horror elements, but it is much more a film that uses the genre to convey a message. The movie monster here seems to be the metaphor for the suffering that human monsters inflict on each other. Antlers is art house.
It often happens in movies with a horror label. The horror as a metaphor. And to be honest, it's often interesting too. In Antlers it is all a bit disappointing. The reason, I think, is that the film ultimately leaves no room for mystery. To unfilled question marks. There is nothing left to speculate in Antlers. In fact, the meaning of all remarkable acts, behaviors and events is explained very "satisfactorily". That happens even with remarkable acts, behaviors and events, the meaning of which needs no further explanation. Wonderful, all that care for the viewer, but not really.
The movie looks fine by the way. The various settings are nice and dark and dingy. The images reinforce an oppressive impression. The score has added value and creates a fairytale atmosphere. From a sinister fairytale, I mean, of course. The acting is fine. The story is captivating here and there. All good things.
Antlers isn't the fine full-blooded horror I expected or the fine arthouse horror I expected to see after kick-off. Fortunately, the film does a lot of good and despite a few annoyances is quite ok.
