Premiere seen at Sundance, including the presence of Matthias Schoenaerts, among others. Pretty nice film, but I'm not as lyrical as the majority of the audience. Schoenaerts is good in his role, but the story with its somewhat clichéd course never really touched me. The side plot with the ketamine and the murder of his buddy also seems dragged along and goes nowhere. Still, the film ripples along nicely and this 'Mustang' has quite a few nice scenes and beautifully shot pictures. So tight enough.

Schoenaerts stars again as Roman, a tormented, taciturn prisoner who becomes estranged from his pregnant daughter [Gideon Adlon]. Myles [Bruce Dern] leads a special program in which inmates are trained to tame wild mustangs. When Roman shows an interest in one of the horses, Myles decides to give him a chance to regain some of his self-respect under strict conditions by building a bond with the untamed horse. He gets help from Henry [Jason Mitchell] who teaches him the tricks of the trade.

Based on the experiences of several convicts who participated in a similar program that greatly reduces the risk of recidivism. De Clermont-Tonnerre, who also contributed to the script, does not make the road to mutual redemption anything but easy and horse lovers should prepare for a very uncomfortable, poignant moment. But both Schoenaerts and his horse make the gradually changing relationship, and the effect it has on man and horse, credible. A beautiful character study with one of the best European actors of his generation in top form.

Good.

The Mustang is a pretty raw-looking movie. A prison in a beautiful yet desolate landscape, in combo with the wild horses that want to be kept under control: it's an unusual combo but apparently based on an existing program.

Either way, it makes for a nice movie. Matthias Schoenaerts is a casting cliché when it comes to brooding, tormented and explosive characters, but there's a reason why he's that cliché. He just does it right, no more. But actually the characters (and the plots around them) are quite superfluous. As a portrait of the horse programme, this is a successful film: very moody and atmospheric. I expected the ending to be rather soggy. Not the Free Willy twist.

3.5
