"Suicide has never been so funny!" screenwriter/director Landon must have thought. Although the execution of that 'joke' is one of the absolute lowest points in film history, it's not the only mistake Landon makes in this terrible horror comedy. Initially he seems to understand that the basic fact of the original could not be taken seriously and he does not really do his best to make a coherent story out of this. It has something to do with quantum mechanics, parallel dimensions and the like, but it doesn't make sense. That doesn't necessarily have to be a problem, but Landon uses that premise to bombard you as a viewer with all kinds of twists that come completely out of the blue. Even worse is that only lead actress Jessica Rothe appears to have comedic talent and the rest have absolutely no idea. Even the few jokes that are nice on paper fall completely into the soup as a result, which is rather annoying for a comically intended horror film. Landon makes a complete mess of things when the film suddenly starts to take itself seriously in the last quarter before degenerating into a heist movie with a semi-satirical, Dadaistic, incomprehensibly noncommittal ending. Those who submit to the rape of 'Stayin' Alive' during the closing credits can still feast on an epilogue that opens the door to yet another sequel. Lovers of self-flagellation, this movie is for you! Have fun with it...

“Now you're stuck in this day. Congratulations. Oh, and by the way? You're going to die. Again... and again... and again.”

Nice. Just as good as the first part, if not better. In the beginning I was a bit afraid that they would change the protagonist and point of view, but luckily the focus quickly returns to Tree.

Jessica Rothe is fantastic in the role and especially the fact that Tree gets her mother back through parallel dimensions, and has to make a choice, is very well developed. Happy Death Day 2U has a ridiculous sci-fi story and not all characters work equally well, but Rothe and director Landon make sure the film has heart and some heartfelt moments too. Without losing sight of the fun and humor, and of course an opening is left for a third part.

So this movie has nothing to do with horror at all, it's just a romantic comedy with some drama and sci fi thrown in on top of it. Jessica Rothe is still a lot of fun, and she saves the film from total destruction. Especially the indifferent way in which she always ends her own life, is done funny. But the story ends up being too chaotic. And the humor becomes too pubescent, especially in the second half of the film, the low point indeed being the scene with the French exchange student. Less funny than Groundhog Day and a less well-constructed story than Back To The Future. The part during the end credits does not bode well for the eventual third part in this series.
