VOX LUX: black swan becomes pop icon

In the traumatic aftermath of a school shooting, a teenage girl sings a song of hushed despair. Before she knows it, her voice has united a nation. She sings and dances in the cage of a studio, under the watchful eye of a producer in sheep's clothing.

Celeste ('heavenly') miraculously survived the shooting, but it quickly becomes clear that that one event will haunt her for the rest of her life. In the deeply uncomfortable Vox Lux, a young singer transforms into a famous pop icon. When young actress Raffey Cassidy disappears from the scene halfway through the film, Natalie Portman takes flight, with the advent of the twenty-first century in her wake. Like a swan that has never been white.

A film to forget quickly. It didn't look like that at first, because the film not only gets off to an overwhelming start but manages to maintain a reasonably high level thanks to a fine performance by Raffey Cassidy in the beginning. With the appearance of Natalie Portman, the film implodes. This is partly due to Portman, who has switched on autopilot, and partly due to the weak continuation of the story, which fails to convincingly connect with the first part of the film. Oh right, Jude Law is in it too. I actually don't know why.

A misunderstood but very beautiful short film, with a clumsy motif that is nonetheless recognized by virtually no one. Even though Willem Dafoe's beautifully raspy voice practically foreshadows it. The price of fame, when you didn't ask for it. Not pre-Madonna, but post-Madonna, with all the diva behavior that inevitably comes with it, with winks at everyone who has ever sung a song and appeared on MTV.

In style and message, in retrospect, a practice run for the even more ambitious The Brutalist (2024), which resonated better but I believe was ultimately just as poorly understood. And an equally fine cast, and with some overlap too, because Raffey Cassidy deserves all the points Portman gets. It is a pity, by the way, that her role wasn't played by Rooney Mara, as seemed likely to happen earlier – yes, Portman is a goddess, but even that can take a superlative.

As a point of criticism, the concert wasn't necessary for me. Singing is really something different from acting, and Portman isn't doing very well at it either, and the dance moves look too labored. Perhaps as a consolation for us mere mortals, just as Corbet apparently makes mistakes too.
