Following in the footsteps of documentary maker Robert Joseph Flaherty, the directors of this film wanted to show the traditional life of the island population by having them - in a reconstruction - hunt white dolphins again. However, once they started turning, they no longer intervened. Perrault also attached great importance to the way in which his characters tell their experiences, he considered the facts of less importance. He refrained from interviews and let the people portrayed tell stories about their own lives.
