Fred von Wellingen is a wealthy industrialist who is part of a large family business. Fred is in love with Lia, a sympathetic waiter at the Berlin cabaret. He proposes to her, much to the horror of his family, who consider Lia and her uncomplicated father far below their rank. The family convinces Fred to give up the girl in exchange for increased position and income in the company.
