The Darkest Minds plot

"The ones who changed will change everything"

A plague kills 98% of American children. Ruby Daly is one of the exceptions and, like the other survivors, retains supernatural powers. These can only be described with the help of a color. Ruby belongs to the orange group that can influence the mind. She is sent to Thurmond's camp where other youths also reside and where she feels miserable.

98% of children die in a short time from Idiopathic Adolescent Acute Neurodegeneration, those who survive appear to have a special gift. It's a good thing that the government has enough concentration camps, because that's where the children all belong! Ruby appears to belong to the strongest and most 'dangerous' category, because she can manipulate thoughts. Somehow, almost all other children with the same ability have been exterminated without any problems, and that means Ruby has an enormous amount of power. She initially manages to survive by pretending to be a 'green', someone who is 'only' super intelligent, but after six years someone discovers that Ruby is not actually super intelligent and she is forced to flee with the help of Cate [Mandy Moore ]. But when she comes across other children on the run, she decides to join them. Together with Liam [Harris Dickinson], Charles [Skylan Brooks] and Zu [Miya Cech], she searches for the camp of The Slip Kid [Patrick Gibson] where they could live safely.
Clearly made for less savvy teenagers, because the story is full of inconsistencies. Plus, this is a pretty flashy clone of Divergent, which of course was itself a clone of The Hunger Games. And yes, there are also similarities with The Maze Runner. Perhaps part 2 of this trilogy (!) will contain some more surprises, but I fear with great fear. Seasoned film viewers can take one star off my rating, but we are clearly not part of the target group.

When I saw the trailer with the 20th Century Fox logo I thought for a moment; ah, a reboot of the X-Men already?

I've never seen all those Divergent, Maze Runner, Hunger Games movies, but I like to think that all those sci-fi teen movies from the past few years are quite similar. Because The Darkest Minds feels like a standard formula film. Teenagers on the run in a post-apocalyptic setting, each with their own strength or characteristic and with some bad guys chasing them. One of the group is there for the comic relief, while in the foreground a romance develops between the two main characters. Because yes, main character 1 is handsome and a girl, main character 2 is handsome and a boy, so they must fall in love with each other. The whole thing is covered up with morals such as 'always be proud of who you are'.

The cast of young players is excellent. The bigger names - Bradley Whitford or that lady from Game of Thrones with a ridiculous wig - actually have nothing to do, but our main characters do a very nice job. Only Liam is one of the most boring bastards with the charisma of Freek Vonk. Why there are never really nice colorful types allowed to walk around in these types of films is a mystery to me. The Darkest Minds is at its strongest when the foursome goes on the run. They even get into a kind of Dawn of the Dead situation in a shopping center and build a nice bond. Towards the end you expect all superpowers to be used for a big action spectacle, but that remains conspicuously absent. The action that is there is not bad, but it is used fairly poorly. And that is The Darkest Minds in a nutshell; The ingredients are there, but the execution is poor.

2.5 stars.
