Only the title is worse. Too much explicit violence, too few (successful) jokes in a film with a serious identity crisis. It starts in a gloomy Lithuania with The Wind Of Change [1990], footage from ALF [1986-1990] and Mila Kunis playing Nintendo Duck Hunt. At that point, everything points to the film being set in 1990, until the inevitable mobile phone arrives. Then why all those 90s references? Well, there is a story, but that is not true from all sides. In any case, it's hard to believe that the dull Audrey [Mila Kunis] and the hyperactive, downright annoying Morgan [Kate McKinnon] are each other's best friends, but clearly the intention is not to provide the viewer with any logic. McKinnon showed on Saturday Night Live that she can be one of the funniest women in the world, but director Susanne Fogel fails to temper McKinnon's wild comedic style (which works perfectly with her brilliant impersonation of Hilary Clinton, for example) and the result is a uncontrolled interpretation that - just like her character by the way - is 'a bit much'. Could have been an action film without the stale (sexual) jokes, could have been an acceptable comedy without the excess of explosions, bloodshed and other violent stuff. Now it is neither flesh nor fish, that is, nothing at all.

Nice. Comedies like this stand or fall on the chemistry between the actors, and Kunis and McKinnon are clearly having the most fun. McKinnon isn't my favorite actress, but here she does well and is somewhat restrained by the more subdued Kunis. The Spy Who Dumped Me is a smooth action comedy, and the most important thing is that the film convinces in both the action scenes and the comedic moments. And then you've actually won the war. Then even the story and some plot developments and twists may be predictable.
