Hold the Dark plot

When three children are found dead in Alaska, it is suspected that wolves are involved. In addition, a six-year-old boy disappears, after which his parents enlist the help of the author and wolf expert Russell Core. He must find him and kill the pack of wolves. Joined by the grieving father on his quest, he is confronted with Mother Nature's cruelty as well as his own shortcomings. It is unclear who really is the prey and who is the predator.

strong!

Green Room was a disappointment to me, this is more the work that suits Saulnier as far as I'm concerned. Both in terms of setting and in terms of balance of genres. An understated thriller with some minor horror accents, which unfolds slowly and in an atmospheric way.

That people put this film away as a lame Netflix original says more about them than it does about the film. Of course you don't have to agree, but Hold the Dark is clearly not band work. Saulnier goes for a very clear concept here and doesn't really deviate from it. It's nice that something like this can be done on Netflix.

The setting is perhaps the most important character in the film, the most beautiful scene is the plane trip at the end, with the ambient song underneath. Reminded me a bit of GitS 2. Furthermore, a lot of atmospheric, calm but bleak scenes that are often roughly interrupted by some action. It's a weird combination, but it works.

And for those who cannot afford Laurence Fishburne, Wright is probably a better and cheaper alternative.

3.5*

A collection of nice ideas and some impressive moments, but as a whole it doesn't work. Skarsgård and Wright's supercool play also makes it difficult to muster any sympathy for the main characters in this story. It is a dark thriller that enlists the help of Russell Core [Jeffrey Wright], a wolf expert, to find out why wolves are said to have killed three children. Vernon Sloane [Alexander Skarsgård] is a war veteran and father of one of the victims who interferes with the investigation. Contains two impressively filmed gunfights, but the lack of focus and emphatically sombre tone make it hard to enjoy.

Mediocre.

Thriller that starts quite moody and mysterious. The desolate setting is used to the fullest and produces considerable subcutaneous discomfort. This can be maintained for about an hour. The excesses of violence are frugal, but do not miss their mark. There is little concealed and thus it wants to go hard.

Over time, the subcutaneous tension will ebb away. Not much is done with the plot or the characters. Jeffrey Wright ultimately has little to do and Alexander Skarsgård lacks charisma to walk around as a unguided, tortured projectile for a long time. The film slowly fades out, which is a shame given its potential and the first hour.
