Paul, Apostle of Christ plot

"Where sin abounds... grace abounds more"

Tells the story of the apostle Paul. While being held by Nero in Rome, he is visited by Lucas who risks his life. However, Nero plans to execute the Christians. While Paul awaits his execution, Luke writes a book about the so-called way and the birth of what will later become the church. Meanwhile, Paul is severely tortured and tormented by his past crimes when, like Saul of Tarsus, he was a ruthless persecutor of the early Christians.

What I wrote in the previous post is exactly what I feel is somewhat missing in this film: too little faith-strengthening message and not enough about the courage of the first Christians who lived under Roman oppression after the death of Christ. The film is rather depressing and less inspiring. For example, Paul's missionary work is not shown, nor is the enormous growth of the Christian community. Only the suffering of the persecuted Christians. The Romans even illuminated the city with captured Christians who were set on fire like torches. Everything looks very small-scale; the Christians seem to be sitting together in a small group in Aquila and Priscilla's house behind a wooden gate, moping and complaining about their fate. The film radiates hopelessness and very little hope and strength. Only the Zealot movement, consisting of young people who want to rise up violently, seems to show any enthusiasm. But Paul reminds them that they must follow the path of love, just as Jesus had taught them. The acting performances are good, especially Olivier Martinez as Prefect Mauritius Gallas and James Faulkner as Paul. Mauritius comes to the realization that his Roman gods are powerless to save his sick daughter. Paul's recurring dream about the victims of his past beautifully portrays his inner struggle. He realizes better than anyone that he is a sinner who needs salvation and forgiveness. Jim Caviezel reminds me too much of his earlier role as Jesus to take him seriously as the evangelist Luke. He does try his best to portray a different character, but his face is just too recognizable. Incidentally, I don't think he is the one who appears as Jesus after Paul's death at the end of the film. I do find that a very fitting ending, very beautiful!

The Apostle Paul [James Faulkner] has been imprisoned by Nero, as he is allegedly responsible for the burning of Rome in the year 64. Young writer Luke [Jim Caviezel] wants to visit Paul before he is executed, hoping that his words (as a confidant of Jesus Christ) will resonate with the outside world. A key role is reserved for the Roman prefect Maurice Gallas [Olivier Martinez]. Funded for the greater glory of Christian America, so religious overtones predominate. But thanks to sincere acting and excellent production values, this is quite watchable, even for non-believers.
