Since his wife died, Baltasar Näf lives alone with his violently adolescent daughter Elisa. Nevertheless, he leads a quiet, orderly and happy life because he has a steady job as a teacher and loves his daughter despite her antics. But then Baltasar accidentally gambles the money for the new school sports field and has to get involved in illegal business in order to recover the lost sum.
