To put it bluntly, I said to several people today: the film is typical fodder for Verhoeven (an observation, not a value judgment perhaps, haha), as long as the film isn't too pagan and secretly goes too far in its grim ideology regarding ritualism, paganism, and witchcraft. You could, after all, unleash all sorts of fantasies and theories on it and seek a deeper meaning. Symbolism and all that.

Personally, I didn't see it and found it somewhat contrived, slightly pretentious, and at times downright ridiculous. But it wasn't a comedy, and the atmosphere was dark and grim. The harsh ambient drones, however, were still atmospheric. But after yet another static shot of a white snowy landscape, dark forests, or towering mountains that lasted for minutes, I'd had enough. There was also no variation in the shots anymore. They were practically the same ones over and over again.

Not terribly bad, but certainly not great either. I left the theater feeling a bit more tired and tired, but I can look back on it more leniently now. It's a difficult rating; it's somewhere between 2* and 2.5*.

I liked this.

It's clear that the soundtrack is the driving force. A bit odd for a film by a director who apparently studied photography, but it's the drones and the exaggerated sounds that make this film a very atmospheric affair. The house here vibrated nicely, which is always a pleasure to experience.

I didn't think it was quite on par visually. It's beautifully shot, that's for sure, but for this style (very slow, with a very grim, dark atmosphere), it needs to be either much tighter or a bit edgier. There's one moment like that at the end, but after that, the film is essentially over. Now, it falls somewhere in between, making it visually lag behind the soundtrack.

The acting is also very strong. A lot of mysterious and slightly uncomfortable scenes, though Feigelfeld could have pushed that a bit further. And so, an intriguing film remains that manages to entertain, but lacks that little something extra to be a true masterpiece. But if this is a graduation project, let's get his real career started soon.

A solid 3.5*

A detailed and atmospheric thriller with a captivating first half hour, primarily following the protagonist's childhood. Director Lukas Feigelfeld demonstrates considerable passion, talent, and quality in the film's visual design. It all looks and sounds excellent, though the tension rarely builds. After the protagonist grows up, Hagazussa veers towards the negative, with a slew of uninteresting characters and their equally uninteresting romance. The snowy landscape is replaced by barren forest settings, and all the alienating visuals build to an unexciting finale. The acting also falls short here, but Feigelfeld at least shows potential for promising future projects.
