Visually, beautifully shot and creative, probably not a successful setup for everyone, but the film makes an effort to give it a classic atmosphere at times.
That is to say with moments clearly studio / green screen, but in the case of this film I found that to be appropriate for the whole.
The acting performances are also top notch, so Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool certainly succeeded in these areas.

I thought it was a pity that we only got to see few old film images of the real Gloria Grahame, many films are mentioned but unfortunately not shown. The cinema scene that they watched Naked Alibi together was clearly one of the highlights, and of course also at the end with Bob Hope! Delicious!
Why not show more old-fashioned images of this obviously talented actress? if necessary, just with half an hour more playing time.

Movie Stars Don't Die in Liverpool is definitely worth seeing as far as I'm concerned, but it could have been more.

3*

Beautifully acted and beautifully portrayed love drama, compelling and moving. Jamie Bell and Annette Bening are both excellent and are surrounded by a first-class supporting cast. Nothing sweet or sentimental; melancholy and poignant. The different time layers are inventively incorporated into the film, through beautiful image transitions and stylized design. For example, all scenes in the US look deliberately artificial and colorful, while everything in Liverpool looks realistic and gray.

Who else would know Gloria Grahame, except the parents and the bartender from this movie and the MovieMeter user interested in Hollywood noirs? This film therefore lacks the "coat rack" of interest in an icon like Monroe, which made My week with Marilyn a hit. On the other hand, Peter's family life comes out very well and his relationship with "Glo" also takes on more and more nuances, so that the "twist" (if you can call it that: the fact that he thinks that she is tired of him and therefore shows him the door, while we later discover from her perspective that she let him think that to spare him the grief of her decline) hits extra hard. Ultimately, therefore, rather a (moving) portrait of a relationship that can never really come to fruition, with beautiful playing by both leads (and by the entire cast).
Not yet mentioned in the above messages, so I'll just do it: at the IMDb trivia I read that the real Peter Turner can be seen for a while as the "stage manager" who moves the two chairs on the stage of the empty theater Peter and Gloria drop.
