Flanagan & King.

Never read the book, I'm mostly familiar with King's older work, but it's been raining King movie adaptations lately. Had already understood that this was a somewhat "different" type of King story, that turned out to be the case in this film.

The emphasis here is very much on the psychological. Nice premise, that's for sure, but after that it's a bit of tinkering to keep it interesting. The film also leans on some drama, but Flanagan never really knows how to find the right balance between the drama and the horror. He's not that far from it, but the drama is perhaps just a little too thick, and when the film gets a bit filthy, there is always a slightly too short run-up.

Actors aren't great either, but they can get on with it. The ending is also a bit rushed, it would probably have been better to shorten the epilogue a bit and to keep the story around the Moonlight Man a bit more mysterious. That revelation no longer had much added value at that time.

In itself it is a nice snack, yet it doesn't feel like a movie where everything was taken out of it. Not from King's premise and not from Flanagan's direction. On the other hand, it is something different again, something that can be praised within the horror genre.

Not interesting enough.

A rather long-winded and boring sit that is also greatly rushed at the end. It all seemed a bit messy and it seemed as if the makers added some storylines to give the very meager concept some body. Unfortunately. Let it hang I guess.

Still not really impressed with Flanagan. Just like with a Before i Wake, for example, it all feels a bit too 'obvious'. The hallucinations that reflect her thoughts and reflections, the symbolism based on traumatic experiences, the flashbacks from Jessie's childhood. It comes across as a somewhat bland and obvious attempt to make it more than 'just' a genre film.

The ending also felt very rushed. No idea how this compares to King's book, but that whole twist in which the Moonlight Man actually turned out to be came across as very contrived. As if it was actually a separate idea for another film that Flanagan wanted to cram in quickly. Fortunately, the film is otherwise reasonably atmospheric and there are some positive outliers that give the whole some shine. The gory scene by hand is of course one of those moments, didn't see it coming. 2.5*.
