Woody Allen goes Eugene O'Neill?

'Wonder wheel' has complaining, failed, pushy, opportunistic characters in common with countless other Allen films, as well as stunning feminine beauty, but where is the stimulating humor, the implicit sensuality, the flirtation with intellectualism, the cinematographic mischievousness, the mischievous undertone, well, you know what?

Does this film take itself seriously, or is Allen really making an attempt at drama that has an existential impact, while his film once again floats in a light sauce of self-mockery and relativism? Does the filmmaker really want to make different films at his age - while for years he has come to coincide with the cliché he himself created?

Boutade: it is never a good idea to not be at peace with yourself.

Confer: 'Wonder wheel' – spurious cinema from a director who could plagiarize himself ten more times for all I care.

An artistically intended abomination. Winslet is okay, but exhausting to watch. The lifeguard's storytelling is also quite nice. But that's really the end of it. Timberlake, Belushi? Come on, they're a dime a dozen! Furthermore, an almost caricatured film. And then those color changes that almost give you a migraine. Why, why? Maybe someone can explain to me what the deeper purpose (or layer?) of that bright color glow is? But okay, for some people the name Woody Allen alone is enough to go to the cinema. However, I thought it was a waste of time and was left with annoyance and headaches.

The idea is interesting and the design very atmospheric (Those beautiful fairground colors for example!) but somehow the story never seems to come together nicely.

The dialogues are generally quite entertaining and typically Woody Allen, but it just wasn't for me. Personally, I liked his previous film (Café Society) a lot better.

Kate Winslet and especially the very beautiful Juno Temple were excellent choices by Woody, although I can't quite place his choice for Timberlake. He didn't do a bad job, but he would have liked to see another actor for this.

For me, Wonder Wheel is especially worthwhile because of the atmosphere it creates, but it is certainly not one of the stronger Allen films.

Small 3*
