Marlina lives an isolated existence in the heart of an Indonesian island. She is attacked by a gang that tries to rape her and steal her livestock. In an attempt to defend herself, she kills several of the men and, eager for justice, embarks on a journey to her own emancipation.

Pretty nice. The nicest thing of course is that you have an Indonesian film that is just a western in everything, but on a barren island in modern times with cars and mobile phones. The atmosphere is good, the images are beautiful and the gimmick is not boring. But as a whole it doesn't add up to enough. The film is painfully slow at times and I especially find the fourth act very meaningless. I feel like the film ends up dying a bit, 3.0*.

I think we all agree about this film: it is a kind of Once upon a Time in the East, there is little wrong with the story (a typical western with a feminist twist) or with the images (atmospheric), but the pace is so slow – as if the tropical Indonesian sun makes all the action languid – that it lacks tension and makes the film a bit boring.
