So great.

A film that it is better not to know much about beforehand. The title actually says it all, you have to discover what happens next for yourself. In any case, a very nice concept, but somewhat surprisingly also a film that manages to develop it properly.

It is clear that there is no big budget behind this film, yet it does not look cheap, easy or fleeting. The team behind this film clearly had vision, creativity and the skills to translate it into a great-looking film.

The acting is a bit mediocre, the soundtrack could probably have been a bit more striking, but what they achieve here in terms of amazement and pure joy is exceptional. It's nice to discover such a film completely blue, but on the other hand it's also a bit sad that people can apparently just release this without it coming on my radar. In times of social media and hypes, you expect to be served a little better or at your beck and call.

4.0* and a extensive review

With this nice directorial debut by Bill Watterston, you should not wonder whether there is a purpose or a meaning to it. Just take the movie as it comes. The story is creative, makes little sense and is simply very entertaining. It goes like this: Dave builds a labyrinth of paper and cardboard in the living room of his apartment. He enters the labyrinth and gets lost. The film that results is hilarious.

Dave Made a Maze is a classic adventure and fantasy film. The difference with other films from that genre is that the entire entourage consists of cardboard and paper. And if you don't let that distract you, the quest that leads through the many cardboard rooms is a fantastic experience.

The film is jumpy, dynamic and has few moments of rest. The viewer is bombarded with so many absurd and lovingly crafted gadgets and effects that it is easy to miss something here and there. The labyrinth is a wild mess with no visible thematic connection between the spaces. No room is like the other. It makes the film stylistically restless but also intriguing and beautiful.

As exuberant and glorious as the entourage is, the characters are just as flat. Their relevance goes no further than as an effective means to make the hidden mysteries of the labyrinth shine. An excellent deal. After all, it is much more exciting to find out what will happen around the next bend than to have to sympathize intensely with overstimulated characters.

The dynamics, the hectic pace and the change of food are wonderful to experience for a long time. Nevertheless, after a certain time in the film, an ounce of fatigue appears due to the large amount of visual impressions. Not surprising, but still a striking point.

Dave Made a Maze is a fantastical experience and a stylistic mess with great attention to detail. Hilarious and very entertaining.

Creative film with unprecedented variety, especially since director Bill Watterson probably did not have an endless budget. Dave Made a Maze is the result of someone who has a real passion for design and lets nothing stand in the way of expressing that. It results in a film that can always offer something new and continues to fascinate, despite the mediocre acting. As a viewer you also have to have some patience for the fairly childish humor, which does not really go together with the psychological content. Fortunately, the latter aspect is explored a little better, but nevertheless the makers could have gone further. However, the absurd concept is developed in such detail and idiosyncratically that all points of criticism will cause little trouble. It's amazing what the visual makers have achieved and how long they can keep it going. For that alone, this special adventure comedy deserves a more than satisfactory rating.
