The Year of Living Vicariously plot

On the set of a historical Indonesian political feature film about the 1960s, Muhammad made a documentary about the current Indonesian political climate. Split-screen is used inventively. Shortly after each other, Amir Muhammad made two very different films, each showing a portrait of a city in a completely different way. In “The Year of Living Vicariously”, the more realistic of the two films, he loosely interweaves two documentary genres: that of the making-of and that of political reportage. The recordings took place during the time when the Indonesians could directly elect a president for the first time and it is the politics of present-day Indonesia that really stirs the tongues.
