"A mother's love knows no limits."
Valeria is 17 and pregnant. She lives in Puerto Vallarta with Clara, her half sister. Valeria doesn't want her long-absent mother April to find out about her pregnancy. But due to economic pressures and the overwhelming responsibility of having a baby in the house, Clara decides to call their mother. April returns and is willing to help her daughter, but Valeria soon finds out why she wished her mother stayed away.

Stylistically, Michel Franco aims for realism, with the result that the film looks quite ugly, but in terms of characters he seeks the proportions of Greek mythology. From pure aversion to (grand)mother April, some involvement eventually arises towards the end, after a tension-free first hour. However, it remains a roughneck psychology. That was also the problem with Despues de Lucia.

17-year-old Valeria [Ana Valeria Becerril] can no longer hide her pregnancy from her 58-year-old mother Abril [Emma Suárez], who herself gave birth to Clara [Joanna Larequi] at 17. After Valeria gives birth to a daughter, Abril quickly concludes that Valeria is unable to care for her child. Abril involves her father Mateo [Enrique Arrizon], also 17, in a dubious plan to force Valeria to distance herself from her daughter. Well-acted family drama provides insufficient insight into Abril's motives for her, to say the least, dubious behavior
