Las Hijas de Abril plot
"A mother's love knows no limits."
Valeria is 17 and pregnant. She lives in Puerto Vallarta with Clara, her half sister. Valeria doesn't want her long-absent mother April to find out about her pregnancy. But due to economic pressures and the overwhelming responsibility of having a baby in the house, Clara decides to call their mother. April returns and is willing to help her daughter, but Valeria soon finds out why she wished her mother stayed away.

Stylistically, Michel Franco aims for realism, with the result that the film looks quite ugly, but in terms of characters he seeks the proportions of Greek mythology. From pure aversion to (grand)mother April, some involvement eventually arises towards the end, after a tension-free first hour. However, it remains a roughneck psychology. That was also the problem with Despues de Lucia.
