Moderate Bigelow.

The last few years there has been quite a bit of talk about police brutality in America, so it's no surprise that the film world is also working on it. Well-behaved, of course, by taking a case that took place in the 1960s and was never fully resolved. Perfect fodder for dramatization.

You clearly notice that Bigelow does everything to get the viewer "into the chaos", but she doesn't really succeed in that. It has become a loud, somewhat muddled film, but it often irritates more than it actually adds anything. Still, the heart of the matter eventually sticks, thanks to Poulter and Mackie, who both do their jobs very well.

Then the film collapses. 45 minutes of courtroom drama to end was definitely not the right choice, but given the further motivations of the film no surprise. This isn't a great film, Bigelow just isn't a great director, but there are some impressive moments here and there that lift this film to just enough.

2.5*

Quite captivating, experiential work by Bigelow that also manages to bring some nuance to the story (the events caused not only racial polarization, but also internal divisions). However, she is less successful in getting into the head of the police officer: why does the man have so much hatred? Why did he lose the pedals?

The court part is necessary, but miss the opportunity to formulate some more answers to the questions above. Moreover, it drags on for a while in the tail of the film (couldn't one work with flashforwards?)

Still, all in all, not bad at all.
