Rodin plot
Paris, 1880. Auguste Rodin finally receives his first official commission from the state at the age of 40: the Gate to Hell, made of figurines, some of which will gain much fame such as the Kiss and the Thinker. He shares his life with Rose, his companion, when he meets the young Camille Claudel, his most gifted student who soon becomes his assistant and then his mistress. Ten years of passion succeed one another, but also ten years of shared admiration and complicity. After their breakup, Rodin continues to work hard. He faces both rejection and enthusiasm that provokes the sensuality of his sculpture.

I know Rodin by name, know that he was a leading French artist and I also know that statue of the kiss. That's all I knew before I watched this film. Experts and enthusiasts of Rodin may offer a different perspective on this unbalanced, biographical film. At times it evokes memories of La Belle Noiseuse, according to many the best film about the creation of art ever made. It is fascinating to see how the master looks and how he manages to transform that image (sic!) into his work of art. Vincent Rodin delivers an excellent performance in that regard, because we really see him at work. In any case, there is nothing wrong with the acting, it is very strong. The problem with "Rodin" is the scenario, which hardly provides any insight into what really moves and inspires the grand master. Rodin makes out with Camille and a considerable selection of his models, argues a lot with Camille and his housekeeper, chats with contemporaries, including Cezanne and Manet. The film is largely set in Rodin's studio, the camerawork is static and does not go beyond recording acting. Filmed without imagination, although the outdoor scenes are a welcome change. That does not alter the fact that this excellently acted biography is too slow, too superficial and, frankly, too boring to please.

Lindon is naturally quite excellent as the main character - the sculptor who has not yet become an absolute final boss and who, as is right, doubts his work. And all the details about his life are dutifully colored in, everything you encounter with a cursory reading on Wikipedia is also neatly covered.
What it does lack is passion, and it can't be otherwise than that there must have been more of it. Also, the story of Camille Claudel comes out rather mediocre - there too, the passion is largely lacking, apart from a scene somewhere at the beginning. Should have kept that, not so much in terms of playfulness but in terms of intensity.
Too bad, because it is clearly not a lack of commitment and talent, although I do wonder whether Higelin was the right choice to play Claudel.
