Strange there are so few reviews here. Found it a pleasant viewer. Film tells the true story of the start-up of the electricity grid and the competition of two men Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse who each try to take over the world with their vision. Edison believes in his direct current while Westinghouse goes for his alternating current. It's a quietly flowing tale of inventors and their many ideas on a setting from the 1880s and beyond. It never gets really compelling, but it didn't bother me either. Piece of history. Learned something in a pleasant way. Considering the poor offer of Hollywood at the moment, this is recommended if you are looking for something 'quiet'...

This reconstruction of the competition between Thomas Edison [Benedict Cumberbatch] and George Westinghouse [Michael Shannon] over the best method of generating power spends too much time discussing the pros and cons of DC and AC and sets these two quantities to free caricatured manner. Edison is self-centered, wants all the credit for himself and does not shy away from any means to sideline the competition, and Westinghouse is a pragmatist who tries to hope for a collaboration that will allow them to move society forward together. Then there is also millionaire JP Morgan [Matthew Macfadyen], who, as Edison's main financier, has a major influence on the course of the battle and the young dreamer Nikola Tesla [Nicholas Hoult], who manages to convince Edison of his enormous value, but the lack of appreciation and respect is hard to stomach. Hoult comes out the best, but Gomez-Rejon completely drowns his impressive cast in a never-ending series of camera movements that are as artful as nonsensical, so that too often it is hardly possible to make a rope.
