Django plot

Django Reinhardt is considered the pioneer of guitar jazz, European jazz and the father of so-called swing jazz, at least in Europe. The film is about the flight of jazz musician Django Reinhardt from Nazi-occupied Paris in 1943. Reinhardt, born in a village in Hainaut, was a gypsy, a population group that was persecuted by the Nazis. This did not stop him from continuing to play his beloved jazz music.

Wasn't impressed. Slow movie that could have been much better. Excellent basics to deliver a hell of a film, but Django can hardly be called a successful project. Looks a bit like French cinema from the eighties/nineties: stylistically beautiful, quite accurate probably, but also a bit boring, because they don't have enough control over telling a good story. Just like the title character, the film looks somewhat emotionless, which is striking in events that contain so much emotion in principle. During the too few moments that Django is allowed to play his beautiful music, you realize that this was a great musical talent, and that aspect should have come to the fore. A positive thing is that the last half hour has a lot to offer in terms of tension (should have been better directed), but you can cancel that out against a number of superfluous, over-stretched scenes from the first part. No, honestly think this guy deserved a better movie.

Although the Nazis are fully guilty of persecuting and murdering all kinds of minorities, the Reinhardt family is the musical cream of the crop in occupied Paris in 1943. The big star is Django [Reda Kateb], who has long steered clear of ethical issues until he meets Louise de Klerk [Cécile de France], the (fictional) queen of the nightlife. She makes Django aware of what goes on outside his bubble and tries to persuade him to use his music to help the local resistance. Kateb is convinced in the title role and fans of Reinhardt's jazz music can enjoy the many musical interludes, but because Reinhardt is mainly concerned with his own interests (and those of his immediate family), he does not come across as very sympathetic. And Comar also seems more interested in the music than in the war. Rather listen or watch an album or concert by Django and friends.
