As You Are plot

Early 90s. During a police investigation, we witness shifting perspectives during pivotal moments between the three teenage friends Jack, Mark and Sarah. Bound by their distaste for the culture around them, Jack and Mark explore the boundaries of friendship and love until Mark's father drives them apart. Just as Jack and Sarah adjust to their lives without Mark, he comes back into their lives. The two boys struggle with their emotions as they deal with the disapproval from their environment.

Nice film about two new stepbrothers who get along well. This film with a somewhat dreamy atmosphere is set in the early 1990s. The development of the friendship between the two boys is well portrayed (excellent casting also helps with this). Sometimes a bit long-winded and the ending (which we have been working towards all the time) is ultimately a bit disappointing.

Psychological teen drama about two boys who explore the nature of their friendship and their sexuality in an emotionally tense environment. In my opinion, the film would have improved in quality if, instead of the annoying police interrogations, the director had developed the relationship between the two boys and their girlfriends a little more. The ending leaves the impression that the film is unfinished.

I think it is a beautiful film, which actually highlights all facets of the underside of American society.

A relationship is staged (originated by chance, their divorced father and mother initially have a relationship) that is difficult in many states in the US, especially among people who fall under the category of 'trailer trash'.

Although the relationship between the two boys does not seem that intense (except for some kissing, it is not that bad, it remains an American film of course), there is a lot of violence by pushovers and the homophobic father (of Mark), who believes that homosexual behavior can be knocked out. They still hold up reasonably well at school.

The entire film gives a bleak and depressing picture of the US, especially around the youth in sparsely populated states.

'I wish you were a girl' is an understandable statement from Mark to Jack. Then the relationship would not have been so complicated. But yeah. For the occasion, Jack puts on a dress for Mark and uses his mother's lipstick. It is meant to be funny, but it is more bitter than funny, especially because Mark is there with a closed eye and a busted lip.

The plot is also extremely depressing. I would have liked to have given them a long and happy life, transcending trash, but that was beyond the writers' control. Mark appears to have been shot dead at the end, the suspicion (there is no definitive answer) falls on Jack.

Given his devotion to Mark, I don't believe that at all, not even as an accident. Although brandishing revolvers and pistols is of course allowed everywhere in the US, Jack would have been devastated if he had shot Mark dead. Whether by accident or not. He does not give that impression at all during the police interrogations.

And, to top it all off, he is also left completely alone.
