Song to Song is set against the backdrop of the Texas music scene. The film focuses on two couples; the struggling songwriters Faye and 'BV' on the one hand, and music mogul Cook and the waitress he decorates on the other. They pursue success in a rock 'n roll landscape of temptation and betrayal.

Navel-gazing vanity of the most insufferable kind. Four yuppies only do nice things, but still complain that they have a very hard life. Each and every one of them is only concerned with themselves and only spout nonsense in excruciatingly slow, endlessly sluggish streams of thought. Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Val Kilmer have completely useless cameos and while Patti Smith makes a slightly less meaningless contribution, I can't call her appearance a blessing either. The only blessing is the moment that the credits disappear and you can give yourself a big compliment for having sat through this nonsense. Think of the song "I have a very hard life" by Brigitte Kaandorp, but then 129 minutes and without any humor or irony. Trust me, this is a tough seat.

I like him, that Malick. Personally I had never seen a film by him and indeed, the film looks like a perfume advertisement that got out of hand, but what beautiful images. In addition, Rooney Mara and Ryan Gosling are very evenly matched as actors and play powerfully against each other. The advantage of this directing style is that you can now really see what an actor or actress has in terms of acting skills and Gosling and Mara know how to deal with that perfectly. Michael Fassbender, on the other hand, is hugely out of place in this role and seems out of place in a movie like this. Also a pity that Natalie Portman is rarely seen. All in all, a film that will stay with me because of its style.

"We thought we could just roll and tumble... live from song to song... kiss to kiss."
A convergence of lives, beautifully portrayed with an eye for environment, detail and sound. Players have a strong chemistry among themselves and that works well, which made the 2 hours fly by for me. Floaty, dreamy, yet realistic. The search for yourself and the ultimate enlightenment as resignation comes in love and the 'simple' life.
